“SERVE” Mission To Nicaragua Week 6 – Open Registration

July 25-August 1

Trip Description

This trip is open to all volunteers (OPEN REGISTRATION) and will be led by Nelson & Tanya. As always, we do NOT only need healthcare professionals, we also need general volunteers who will help count pills and vitamins, organize the clinics, sort shoes and donations, and run the activities. We have many jobs like making goodie bags, sorting toys, and recording stats that do not require healthcare knowledge.

This week will differ from other trips in many ways.

SERVE Week #5 team will focus on Corner of Love’s new location near Santa Emilia (Matagalpa) and carry out clinics at the Estancia and surrounding villages. One day will also be dedicated to construction tasks for the education program location. There will be one day of unpacking and organizing the pharmacy, one day of special patient visitation, two days of clinic, and one day of construction activities.

There is a special COLLECTION LIST for people who join this week. We especially need eyeglasses, hydrocortisone, and some specific building supplies, which can be purchased at Home Depot. For the complete list, send a request to nelson@corneroflove.org.

Santa Emilia is a very poor area and we are just beginning to bring teams there. SERVE Week #5 will be a very unique mission as we begin to sow our hearts into the area and work to clean the property and help God’s light shine at the new acquired farm.

Suggested Itinerary:

ARRIVAL DAY: July 25 – any flight arriving in Managua on this date

DEPARTURE DAY: August 1 – any flight departing on this date

On these dates a COL staff person or representative will meet you at the airport. COL staff may be inside the secure area of the airport (wearing a Corner of Love t-shirt so you can identify them) or waiting outside the glass doors where you will come out. They will be able to find you because you will be wearing a COL t-shirt like theirs. (This is a requirement and we will provide you with the t-shirt before you travel.)

Please note that because our team members often arrive throughout the day, our staff may instruct you to wait at a nearby restaurant or hotel while we welcome additional participants who arrive after you. Kindly be prepared to spend the afternoon or evening standing-by while we welcome those whose flights come in after yours. If this is asked of you, our staff will take you to the waiting place (or put you on a shuttle that will take you there) and you will have access to wi-fi, food, etc. You may want to bring a bit of extra funds to buy lunch or dinner there. Usually all flights are in by 9:30PM, at which time we pick up team members who are waiting, load the last travelers, and then depart for San Ramon. (Departure time may be earlier or later, depending on the travel schedules of team-members, but the usual meeting time is 9:30PM at Camino Real Hotel.)

Alternative Itinerary:

If you arrive a day or more early we recommend staying at Camino Real (better hotel for resting) or Hilton Princess (better hotel for sightseeing) and prefer that we make the reservation for you. Please contact tanya@corneroflove.org to arrange your accommodations and make note of these plans on your trip application. You will be able to pay the hotel directly by cash or credit card.

If you depart after the scheduled “end date” you will be responsible for your own transportation and accommodations post-mission. If you need assistance with this please contact us.

On alternate dates a COL staff person or representative may or may not meet you at the airport. For this reason, less critical mission cargo is usually assigned to early travelers. (I.E. You will likely not carry meds or other prescription items that require our assistance to clear customs.) Approximately 3 to 7 days before you travel, we will email instructions on how to board the hotel’s shuttle and how we will connect with you. Note that people arrive on alternate dates very frequently and this is a wonderful option that gives you the chance to get some rest before starting the mission – there is nothing to be scared about if you plan on arriving early!

Our team will depart to San Ramon on the Suggested Itinerary ARRIVAL DAY, usually at 9:30PM. Make sure to communicate with us about arriving early or staying past the end date.

Registration Steps:

  1. Please send your trip application and deposit before July 1. After that, you may still sign up and join the team, but we will ask that the cargo assigned to you be less-critical items (such as toys and clothes, instead of meds)
  2. Acquire your plane ticket
  3. Request a copy of the Team Handbook, sign the Disclosure Set, return completed disclosures to cara@corneroflove.org
  4. Pay for your trip cost. ($1250 payable in the U.S., $100 payable in Nicaragua.) Most individuals make an initial deposit of $375. All team members may seek tax-deductible donations towards their $1250 individual cost
  5. Read all info under “GO TO NICARAGUA” section at corneroflove.org
  6. Speak with Tanya & Nelson Amador regarding pre-trip information, special collection list, tools needed, etc (nelson@corneroflove.org). Team meetings will most likely be held in Lake Forest Park in the months of May & June.
  7. Help collect funds and supplies. Pack the items collected in 50lb cargo luggage if you are outside Washington State, or pick up cargo luggage from Corner of Love’s Maple Valley, WA office if you live in Washington State. Each participant is asked to bring two suitcases or bins weighing 50lbs each. (Most airlines charge $40 for the 2nd piece of cargo. Please be prepared to pay this when checking-in at airport)

Cost:

  • $1250 payable in the U.S
  • $100 payable in Nicaragua
  • $90 – $120 recommended spending money for entry visa, two dinners out, souvenirs
